Spiritual direction is an ancient monastic practice that started in early Christianity, where people followed the desert mothers and fathers out to the wilderness to ask them how to know God. Spiritual direction is a way of seeing how God is working in your life and will help deepen your relationship with God.
The experience of spiritual direction can fill a void and longing in your soul. It can help you be attentive to the whispers of the Holy Spirit in your life. John 16:7-12 tells us of the promise Jesus made to his disciples when he was leaving them. Jesus promised his followers the Spirit of truth will come in his stead to guide them. Spiritual direction is important because you can learn to listen attentively to God in your everyday life so that he may use you to spread his love and grace to the world.
The goal of spiritual direction is to help us see Jesus beyond physically, to see how God is working in our lives. Those who seek spiritual direction are usually facing life changes, difficult choices, spiritual dryness, loss or uncertainty.

Biblical examples of spiritual direction.
In the Old Testament, Moses and Joshua; and Elijah and Elisha. In 1 Samuel 3, Eli realized the LORD was calling young Samuel, and told Samuel to respond and listen to God. In the New Testament, Timothy is spiritually tutored by Paul. In Acts 8, Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch.
Spiritual direction is not...
Spiritual direction is not a fellowship, not a Bible study group, nor an accountability group. It is not the same as counselling. It is different from a regular conversation, seminar, and workshop.
A spiritual direction session may start with a prayer and silence. Using Scripture, prayer, spiritual disciplines, or contemplation, the director and directee will seek together to hear God’s voice. The focus is on the directee’s relationship with God, to draw closer to Him through attentive listening to the Holy Spirit and asking gentle questions.
Any topic about life can be brought up. Often, it is helpful to have something in mind to bring to a session that you would like to address and share.
Come with an open heart and prepare to listen with love. There may be times that you will be
given a Bible passage or verse to read beforehand. Bring a contemplative attitude. We will not
be solving any problems. Instead, we will be reflecting on spiritual concerns and focus on soul
care. In the case of a virtual meeting, find a quiet and calm room where you will not be
disturbed.
